I saw something funny yesterday. My family went to the local Econsave supermarket, which is like the el-cheapo version of Tesco or Carrefour. And lo and behold, at the entrance there was a local bank promotiong (of all things) their Platinum card. The bank's staff was trying to interest pakciks, makciks, uncles and aunties who are probably no longer working (since they've retired) in getting a credit card of their own. Talk about misplaced marketing strategy!
Speaking of marketing, I think local banks should follow the strategies of overseas banks. Did you know that credit cards overseas have a flexible interest rate depending on how good a paymaster you are? That is unlike our local banks who charge you flat out at 18% notwithstanding how long you've been a customer and even if you are a good paymaster. And it's so much easier to get a Platinum card overseas too. Like the Flat Rate Platinum credit card from The Co-Operative Bank in UK. It charges you a lower interest rate of 11.9% fixed rate for 5 years (and variable thereafter) and provides up to 46 days interest free credit*. You can apply for this card simply if you are aged 25 and older and hold an existing credit card (or earn 25,000GBP a year). (Note: You should only get a credit card if you are absolutely sure you can keep your spending in check though. Always exercise financial restraint.)
How I wish I was earning and spending overseas!
