Be Right Back

There will be a short commercial break on As The World Spins. The blog writer is taking a hiatus to sort out some things in her life and hopes to come back with a better focus and greater blog posts. Hurhurhur. Call it quality control (or perfectionist tendencies) kicking in. It will be strange (to say the least) not posting anything, but you know... absence makes the heart grow fonder!

p.s. The last post for a bit will be the tally of May chups to find out the most hard-working chupper for this blog. Happy chupping!

p.p.s. But then again, being the contradictory person that I am, I just might sneak in a post or two now and then. Oh me oh my!

East is the new standard for beauty?

I couldn't believe my eyes and my ears. But it is a reality. Miss Japan was crowned Miss Universe last night in Mexico. This is the first time as far as I can remember that an Asian has won an international beauty crown (India excluded, that is). Someone correct me if I am wrong. What makes it even more unbelievable is that Miss Korea was also in the top five. And Miss Japan beat out girls in the mould of traditional beauty queens - Miss Venezuela and Miss Brazil - countries famed for producing beauty pageant winners.

IMHO, I found Miss Korea to be prettier than Miss Japan. Click thru on the links to see their sexy swimsuit photos. What say you?

Sometimes I'm not as strong as I seem to be.

That familiar face / line again

Is it my face? I really wonder. I seem to keep getting these same lines from strange guys in shopping complexes.

Guy: "Excuse me miss, your face is very familiar. Have we met before?"
Me: "I don't think so."

You would think they'd get the hint, but still they will persist and follow-up with this line...

Guy: "What is your name?" or "Can I have your phone number?"
Me: "No, I don't know you."

Today's guy was an African guy who opened up with "Excuse me, are you Malaysian?" followed by the exchange above. After I walked away from him, I still saw him from the corner of my eye, he was lingering in the vicinity staring at me. Sounds and looks like a stalker, eh? *shiver*

But seriously, if they are trying to use this method to pick-up girls in shopping complexes, it's so lame! No female in their right mind would respond to this. Well, not me anyway. Guys / gals - Any comments?

Cars cars cars

My Dad's Ferrari car collection was completed last weekend. We got all six models and they're all sitting pretty in the original packaging as collector's items. *roll eyes* So he got one more of the F1 racing model for fun and to take pictures of, hence the picture above. By the by, my Dad's the Ferrari fan, and I'm not. (McLaren for me anyday!)

Oh yeah, while I'm on the subject of cars, Perodua launched their Kancil / Kelisa replacement Viva on 10 May. If you've seen the advertisements, they use that song LOVE which I think is originally sung by Nat King Cole. Love that song. I was so ke-po-chi about the new model that I moseyed on down to the nearest showroom the night after the launch to check it out. And I did like the looks of the Viva more than the Myvi, its predecessor. Almost made me wanna get one, if not for the fact that I still have years left to pay to the bank on my Kelisa. Not to say that I don't appreciate the convenience of my Kelisa, but I do like the bigger cabin space of the Viva. Oh, and the ABS system. And the signal lights on the side mirrors. And it comes in Imago green, my most favorite Perodua color of all. And the moulded drink holders in the space between the front seats. And the power windows for all four windows. And the height-adjustable driver's seat. And most of all, the mirror in the sunshade above the driver's seat. (It's a female thing. *wink*)

But, what will happen to my Kelisa if I do get a Viva? The re-sale value ain't gonna be that fantastic primarily because of the fact that Perodua is ceasing production of the Kelisa. Plus, I just recently renewed the insurance and road tax, so that would be lost too. And cars depreciate in value way below the price you want to sell at. So, no way I'm getting a Viva anytime soon unless I win one in a contest.

Here comes the money

PayPal finally fixed that glitch in their system that demands Malaysians to enter a US bank account before we could accept payments. And my monies are now safe and sound inside my PayPal account. This inspired me so much that I've just gone on a money-making-blog-spree. At one fell swoop I have added PPP Direct, Fummo, Nuffnang and Advertlets. Adsense and Amazon were already here all along. What else am I missing out on? If your eyes are suddenly bedazzled by the array of blog ads and sponsored posts that pop up, please excuse me, ya?

Don't worry, I shall try to keep the ads as uncluttered as possible and restrict the sponsored posts to a minimum. I'll still rant and rave and post silly stuff, but if you want a more intimate spin, well, you should know where to look. Neh... *big silly grin* (OMG, I'm promo-ing my own website! Nooooo.....*trailing off*)

Voice over performance

America has spoken. Jordin Sparks is the newest and youngest ever, American Idol. It's depressing how I can't summon up more enthusiasm for the season finale, but ever since Melinda Doolittle got eliminated, it's like I just don't quite care who wins. No offense to the young Ms. Sparks - she did sing better than Blake last night but I do think that both Melinda and Blake are far more talented than she is.

Melinda is the consummate artiste. She's everything you look for in a seasoned veteran of the stage and then some. Give her any genre, and she'll pull it off with aplomb for you. Even when she thought she couldn't handle rock, she did and sounded like a young Tina Turner doing it. She has the grace and the poise and yet still be humble after achieving so much through American Idol.

Blake is a performer and arranger extraordinaire. Some of you may not like his beatboxing and what he does to classic songs, but he's fresh and original with a unique sense of what's cool and what's not. Like Jamiroquai, his is a sound that has to be liked and cannot be acquired. Unfortunately for him, the finale song, This Is My Now, was out of his comfort zone and there was little he could do about it.

Jordin has a powerful voice. At seventeen, she displays a maturity and understanding of the song better than other teenagers. But I've always found her performances to lack a certain oomph and the "chill factor" (when it's so good that I get a wee bit of shivers and goosebumps). But admittedly, she did a better job with the finale song, This Is My Now, than Blake.

Am I happy about the outcome? *shrugs* I can't really tell.

But I look forward to seeing the careers of Melinda and Blake in the future. They should go far.

Very. Important. Night.

It's a big night / morning for some people tonight. Liverpool fans. AC Milan fans. Mostly male. Some females included. People who bet on European football. People who run mamak stalls. Pubs? The folks at Astro. Yup, very big important night that comes only once a year.

Lots of this will also be consumed. Teh tarik. Milo ais. Roti canai. Thosai. Beer. Chips. Popcorn? Whatever floats your boat and fills your tummy.

The diehards will be decked out in their team colors. Jerseys. Scarves. Flags. Hats. The bookies will be decked out with their gear. Handphone. Walkie talkie. Laptop. Internet access. The mamak stores will be decked out with their stuff too. Projector and tv. Astro subscription. Copious stores of tea leaves, Milo, Maggi and flour. They pray it won't rain in the wee hours of the morning.

Some people will take planned leave for tomorrow. Some will take emergency leave after being unable to wake up tomorrow either from sleep deprivation or hangover. Some will take medical leave tomorrow from either tummyache from eating too much, suffering hangover or worse case scenario, feeling so bad because their team lost.

What will I be doing? I'll be sleeping. *grin* Not my team mah.

And then there were bugs

Now I am the first to admit that I have a horror-movie phobia. That is, I don't like horror movies, especially those slasher type movies. But I have a sneaking fascination for monster movies because I like to scare myself with sharks (or killer fish), snakes, crocodiles, dinosaurs and these mean animals are generally mutated. I'm on the fence when it comes to bugs - they are part of creepy-crawlies and I chicken out of them.

Then this bug movie poster caught my eye. Bug by Lionsgate Films. Hmm... looks interesting. Wonder what kind of bugs these are. Mutant bugs? Alien bugs? Hybrid bugs? The ol' curiousity is pricked mainly because of Harry Connick Jr. Harry is in this movie? I wonder what he's up to and if he's the good guy or the bad guy (and if he can act? He's a singer, right?). Then there's Ashley Judd too. She's touted as giving a shattering, Oscar-worthy performance in this movie. I can think of a glass shattering scream ala Psycho already! Or maybe she's like the Borg queen. And the bugs - do they invade bodies for hosts? *shiver* Sounds like the perfect recipe for some bug mayhem. You can watch the movie trailer here.

Bug will be in theatres this Friday, 25 May 2007. Perfect timing for the upcoming Malaysian school holidays. I think I'll grab my little cousin brother (who likes horror stuff) and pay the cinema a visit for this bug movie. Hope there aren't any real-life bugs there!

Food, glorious food!

I got me my very first tag from Giddy Tiger, and it's all about food. Yum! *drool, slurp* Now I could go on and on about what I like but there's a catch... I can only talk about one kind of food. What to pick? What to choose? I'm going to go outstation with this one, but with a local location twist. Sounds intriguing, yeah?

Say hello to the best Ipoh Chicken Rice ever. Think of smooth, white steamed chicken with a light drizzle of soy sauce on steaming flavorful rice accompanied with crunchy authentic Ipoh bean sprouts and wonderful fishballs in soup... Mmm... One of my favorite weekend foods, my family and I visit this stall hidden in Bukit Rahman Putra about once every two weeks for a fix. I've brought people here before who can't stop thinking about the chicken for weeks after. *grin* Funny how I prefer this stall in KL over the 'real' Ipoh chicken rice stalls in Ipoh itself. If you're a true blue Ipoh purist, try the chicken with 'hor fun' or noodles instead of rice.

The dream ends for one...

I am SPEECHLESS! Ok, no not really. For a moment or two, maybe. Shocked, yes. Upset? Just a little bit. What have the Americans gone and done now?!?!?!?!?!

They didn't vote for Melinda Doolittle, that's what.

I've been following the progress of Melinda Doolittle ever since the auditions and my two cents worth of opinion is that this lady is the best thing ever to happen to American Idol. She is that good. Maybe she was too good and that brought about her shocking elimination from the competition last night. There just wasn't any pressing need to vote for her. It was too little, too late. (Yes, bad pun, I know. *wink & grin*)

But IMHO, I think the Americans got it wrong this time again. Just like they did last time. And the season before that. What am I yammering on about?

Season 1 - they chose Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini over Tamyra Gray. OK, so Kelly has blossomed into a recording artiste in her own right but that was after she struck out on her own away from the Idol spotlight. Justin who? No one knows where he is now. Tamyra was a talented singer / songwriter in the vein of Colleen Bailey Rae, but not a popular kind of singer.

Season 2 - they chose Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. I didn't watch this season, so I don't know if they got it wrong or right. But the winner - Ruben - is less successful than the runner-up - Clay.

Season 3 - they chose Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo. Along the way, they chose to send home LaToya London and Jennifer Hudson, who were more talented than Diana DeGarmo who was a precocious 16 year old. Yes, the Idol reject Jennifer Hudson who now has both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Dreamgirls.

Season 4 - they chose Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice. I have to say that right out of the starting blocks Carrie Underwood is by far the best American Idol to date. America got this one season right for America, I think.

Season 5 - they chose Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee. While I rooted for Taylor in the finals because he was the underdog, my personal favorite was Elliot Yamin and Chris Daughtry. But the crooner and the rocker were no match for the saccharine (fake!) sweetness (and barely veiled sex appeal) of McPhee. Chris Daughtry was shockingly eliminated into 4th place, but he's having the last laugh now as his album is doing well, while Hicks and McPhee struggle to sell.

This season 6 - they chose Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis. Who knows how this one will turn out.

From the onset of the current season, the first really good contestant to go was Sabrina Sloan. Then they picked off Stephanie Edwards. LaKisha Jones sang herself into a corner with her song choices, but she was vocally more talented than all the male contestants put together. Melinda Doolittle is, was the best. But will anyone remember them later?

Only time will tell which contestant will last the distance, but for next week's finals I have to say I prefer Blake over Jordin. Why? I'll tell you next week.

How SMART is that tunnel?

So Malaysia finally soft-launched the first of its kind, the Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel (SMART) on 14 May 2007 (Monday). I didn't have any inkling that it was open until I saw a steady stream of cars exiting the tunnel at Jalan Tun Razak the day after. So that was the cause of the congestion and slow-moving traffic all the way from the Seremban Highway! Today was no better and I heard a motorist on the radio yesterday evening complaining that she was stuck in a traffic jam INSIDE the tunnel. Is anyone thinking of Sylvester Stallone in Daylight yet?

If I were a motorist considering using the SMART tunnel and I encountered said bottleneck to exit the tunnel after paying a high toll fee (although that has yet to be set), I would think twice about using it. Pay toll already also still meet traffic jam! But it could be a case of "new toilets" by the Malaysian public. Anything new must try first and while it's still damage-free. Then, after a while the Malaysian mentality of "use while free, don't use if you have to pay" will kick in, and the SMART tunnel should be relatively traffic free once toll collection starts. Would you pay RM 3 - 4 (fake estimated toll) to save 20 minutes of time on a daily basis? Me, a normal wage earner, would not unless I was really pressed for time and desperate.

OK, so that's about the jam and the toll. But my overactive imagination tells me this... this SMART tunnel is supposed to be both an access road for traffic as well as a diversion for excess floodwater as part of upgrading KL drainage system. Rest assured, people, that the designers and builders of the SMART tunnel took this into consideration and built THREE different levels into the same tunnel - two for traffic, one for water. So both won't meet at say some point in the middle of the tunnel. Sounds safe, right? But what worries me is this... How SMART are the personnel manning the SMART tunnel? I can just imagine Ah Beng, Ali, Muthu or Jack sipping teh tarik and upon hearing thunderstorm, flicks a switch to activate the water tunnel but... you get my drift? *grin*

Note: This post is intended in jest and does not mean and disrespect to the marvel of engineering and billions that went into the making of this tunnel and the people manning it. I am sure that there are adequate safety controls implemented. *grin*

Ahhh... to be eighteen again... care-free... eager... always with hope for a better tomorrow! Hehehe... that sounds like it was ages ago but in reality it was just a few years back. Surprised? Yes? No? Or you already knew?

It rained in the wee hours of the morning around 4.30 am, and my first thoughts on hearing the patter of raindrops on the kitchen awning out back were, "I hope it doesn't jam up the roads to work." Thankfully, that did not happen although there was slight congestion at the point where the newly opened SMART tunnel meets Jalan Tun Razak, slowing down traffic significantly. But I still got to work within my targeted time i.e. before 8.00 am (work hours proper begin at 8.45 am). Yes, I am a dedicated employee. Hurhurhur.

Today marks my 2 and a 1/2 month milestone in the new job. In total, 52 working days (excluding the recent Labour / Wesak public holidays) or 13 weeks. And I felt every single one of those days. Time did not fly by, although I have fallen into a set routine by now. They do say that it only takes 30 days to form a habit for life. I have formed personal certain opinions about the job, the people I work with and the company, but am not at liberty to discuss them in this blog. Let it suffice to say that I personally do not see a future with them? But such things are not for me to decide. Still, it adds up to the unsettled feeling somewhere inside.

It's a day after Mother's Day, but still people are wishing women "Happy Mother's Day". Like just now, when I went to the Jusco supermarket with my mum, the cashier cheerily greeted my mum with "Happy Mother's Day!". His excellent manners are to be commended! Not like most supermarket cashiers who grumpily process your goods with nary a smile or a word, this cashier was happily chatting away with my mum while he packed our groceries. He should be commended for being the opitome of service with a smile!

Oh yeah, Pringles has a new packaging out. I kind of prefer the old packaging (as pictured above) because I'm so used to it. But I guess all things have to be upgraded and changed eventually. As long as the taste remains the same, I'd be happy!

Ooh, I bumped my dad's car on Saturday trying avoid an idiotic gardener who was squatting on the road beside the curb at a corner. Left a huge scrape mark 1 foot long. Not good! Bummer.

It's been so hot lately but yet there was a freakish thunderstorm on Sunday evening lasting over 2 hours. It brought down leaves, tree branches, caused a tiny bit of flooding and brought down an illegally constructed shed on the main road near my housing garden. But it was still hot in the night after the downpour! Must be the effect of global warming.

DiGi Yellow Man!

I saw the DiGi Yellow Man in Damansara CineLeisure over the weekend of 28 - 29 April 2007 and couldn't resist snapping a shot for the album. But I do think this DiGi Yellow Man was a bit too thin compared with the advertisement, hor?

It's easy to win a prize

You gotta admit it, beyond receiving presents, prizes have got to be the next best thing in life besides receiving free stuff. I'm not scheduled to receive any presents until Christmas time, and free stuff (the good kind) is hard to come by, so I thought I'd try my hand at prizes.

That's where the Bid4Prizes website comes in handy. It's way easier to get a prize from them than if you enter one of those contests that make you buy stuff and write a slogan for them (none of my slogans have hit the mark so far!) or creatively sign the company name (I like my handwriting and all, but it doesn't win marks for creativity!). Right now I have my eyes on that cherry red BMW 3 series... It's a beemer, it's the cute 3 series, and it's red. Perfecto! I can just imagine myself taking the curves of a road to nowhere in it, with Matchbox Twenty blasting away as my beemer eats up the miles... Yeah, baby!

I'm baaacckk!!

Yessss... my broadband Streamyx is finally back after I realized I had to reactivate it by calling them (uhm, account got suspended after bill went missing. LOL!). *slaps forehead* They did say I'd get reactivated within 24hrs, but I could start trying after 2hrs - which evidently didn't work (I spent the whole of last evening attempting to log-on) so they shouldn't even mention it. Geez. But yes, I'm back on the online chupping trail! Hopefully this means I'll get on the points scoreboard for THHC for May and be more prompt in responding to comments. And it also means I'll be able to ramp up my PPP endeavours, which died a rather quick death after my first post lately. This is so +ve chi! YAATTAAA!

In other news, I'm reminded of how short life can be as my uncle was diagnosed this week with cancer - in three places, lung, kidney and liver. He's not at the critical stage so the doctors have recommended commencing chemotherapy ASAP. I don't know how the family's taking it, but will probably be going to visit them over the weekend. Love life, don't take it for granted.

Lots of other things in my mind, but just haven't had the time to sit down, sort it out and write it out. I miss my blogging therapy. I'm so glad I'm finally back after nearly a month of restriction!

This post was supposed to have been out yesterday but it was a public holiday - Labour Day (a mis-named holiday IMHO, because no labour is done on this day!) and so I was not "labouring" away at my laptop. Hahaha.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand... If you've been a regular visitor to my little corner of the web, you would have noticed those pretty T H H C™ logos on my sidebar... neh *point point to the right*
